To send luggage by courier in India, first separate the things you need while travelling and immediately after arrival. Check whether the service accepts your packed suitcase and its actual contents. Compare quotes using the finished weight and dimensions, confirm packaging and delivery arrangements, and name a receiving person. An estimated delivery date is not a reason to ship everything you need on arrival.
Going home for a few weeks or moving into a hostel can turn a simple journey into a suitcase problem. You want fewer bags on the train, bus or flight. Sending some belongings ahead sounds sensible.
The catch is that you and your luggage are now making two different journeys. If you arrive tonight and the bag arrives later, what do you actually have with you?
That is where I would start. Not with a claim about the cheapest courier, but with what must be available when you reach the other end. This guide covers domestic India shipments. The official service and packaging pages were checked on 3 November 2026.
Split your luggage into travel-now and arrive-later belongings
Put the things needed during the journey and your first stretch at the destination into a separate bag. Think about phone access, charging, keys, essential documents and a change of clothes. Do not seal away the only thing that lets you enter your room.
Then identify belongings you can genuinely wait for. Spare clothing, extra bedding or non-urgent books may be candidates, subject to the chosen service’s rules. This is not a universal approved-items list. The actual contents still need checking.
Imagine a student arriving at a new hostel before the shipped bag. If the room key, charging cable and every clean T-shirt are in that shipment, a lighter journey has bought a very inconvenient evening. This is a planning example, not a customer story.
The useful decision is not whether an object fits in a suitcase. It is whether you can manage without it while that suitcase is travelling separately. The amount of time you can wait should shape your shipping choice.
| Belonging or need | Starting decision | What to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Keys, access documents and first-arrival essentials | Keep accessible with you | How you enter, communicate and manage the first night |
| Extra clothing or non-urgent books | Consider sending ahead | Contents acceptance, packing and a receiving person |
| Fragile, valuable or unusual belongings | Review before including | Specific handling, exclusions and any suitable protection terms |
| Unknown contents or items requiring special transport | Do not add casually | Applicable service and transport restrictions |

Ask whether the service accepts the suitcase and the contents
A suitcase is packaging as well as a container of personal belongings. Acceptance of clothing does not automatically mean that any suitcase, exposed wheel or loosely attached strap is suitable for the same shipping service. Tell the provider what you want to hand over.
avaan’s official excess-baggage page lists suitcases, travel bags, backpacks and cartons among the items it handles, while excluding restricted and prohibited goods. It describes both doorstep pickup and airport-counter options. Check the actual route and booking options rather than assuming every location is covered.
Do not treat a broad category called personal belongings as permission to include everything from a bedroom. Make a contents list. Ask about any uncertain item before booking, especially where transport mode or special handling matters.
For a traveller arrangement, read ShipdeHop’s prohibited-items guidance as well as the actual transport operator’s rules. ShipdeHop excludes concealed or unknown contents, cash and high-risk valuables, hazardous goods and several other unsuitable categories. A sender’s reassurance does not override an exclusion.

Get the quote for the finished shipment, not the empty bag
Pack to the provider’s requirements, then establish the finished outer dimensions in cm and weight in kg. Include any required outer carton and protection. An empty suitcase measurement does not describe a larger box around it.
avaan’s FAQ distinguishes scale weight from volumetric weight, which reflects the space occupied, and says it charges using whichever is higher. Ask your chosen provider how its own chargeable weight is calculated. Do not carry one company’s divisor or limits into another company’s quote.
A lightweight but bulky bag can therefore need a different quote from a compact heavier package. The useful comparison is between written quotes for the same finished shipment, with the same contents, origin, destination and service scope.
Ask what the total includes: packaging materials, packing assistance, pickup or counter drop-off, delivery scope, taxes and any applicable additional charges. If you must travel to a counter, include that trip in your own comparison. A per-kg headline is not the complete decision.
Use the cost-planning tools with your own amounts where helpful. Keep the cost of your personal journey separate from the cost of sending the luggage, then check whether changing one creates a new expense in the other. Do not assume a saving until you have compared the full alternatives.

Make packaging responsibility explicit before collection
Ask whether you should provide a prepared suitcase, a protected suitcase inside an outer carton or repacked contents in a suitable box. There is no single packaging method in this article that overrides a provider’s requirements.
Delhivery’s official packaging guidance says packaging choice depends on dimensions, weight, fragility and physical state. It advises checking boxes for damage, using appropriate cushioning and filling voids. These are shipment-preparation requirements, not proof that a particular suitcase has been accepted.
avaan’s page describes weighing, packing and tagging at its kiosks, while its FAQ also asks customers to have baggage securely packed and says assistance is available if additional packaging is needed. Resolve exactly what will be provided at your selected handover point.
If you are paying for assistance, ask what materials and work are included and who supplies them. Do not arrive with an open bag because a marketing image showed somebody wrapping luggage. Confirm what you personally need to have ready.
Keep a record of the prepared exterior and any existing damage before handing it over. Follow the chosen service’s labelling instructions and protect private addresses or labels from public posts. A photograph records what you saw, not a guarantee against later loss or damage.

Plan the receiving window around a person, not just a pincode
The address may be correct while the delivery plan is wrong. A new tenant may not have moved in. A hostel office may accept some deliveries but not store bulky luggage. A family member may be away for the day. Confirm the actual receiving arrangement before dispatch.
avaan says its delivery estimate depends on the destination and selected service and is shown during booking. Treat that as the estimate you need to evaluate, not a promise invented from a general article. Ask the chosen provider what happens if the recipient is unavailable.
Confirm who can receive the bag, when they can do so, and what alternative the service permits if the first attempt does not work. Do not assume reception, security staff or a neighbour has accepted responsibility without asking.
Build an arrival buffer based on how long you can manage without the shipped belongings. If that buffer is zero, keep the essential items with you or choose another arrangement whose actual terms fit the need. Sending earlier only helps if someone can receive earlier.
For an existing-traveller handoff, agreement is even more specific: the willing traveller, sender and recipient need compatible places and time windows. Do not turn a delayed arrival into an unagreed transfer to another person.

Use ParcelPool only when the actual bag fits the actual journey
ShipdeHop ParcelPool lets you explore sending an appropriate item with somebody already going that way. A whole suitcase is not automatically a suitable traveller parcel. Contents, packed bulk, weight, carrying arrangements and the traveller’s own luggage all matter.
Start a ParcelPool plan with the actual contents and both handoffs. If the bag is too bulky, involves unresolved restrictions or requires a fixed operational service, investigate a suitable baggage or courier provider instead. A people-powered option needs a willing person, not just matching city names.
ShipdeHop takes zero commission, now and always. A traveller contribution, packaging, collection travel and other agreed expenses can still exist. Do not compare zero commission with a provider’s complete shipping quote as if those were the same number.
The website currently lists the iPhone app as available and Android as coming soon. Browser drafts are planning tools, not accepted shipments or confirmed travellers. Check current options in the app. If you are abroad planning a visit home, the Indians abroad page supports domestic India planning, not cross-border ShipdeHop shipping.

Send one complete quote request and keep the arrival bag
Try this request: I want to send [number] pieces from [origin pincode] to [destination pincode]. The contents are [specific list]. The finished dimensions are [length × width × height in cm] and weight is [kg]. The suitcase or outer packaging is [description]. Please confirm acceptance, the required packing, the full charge and the estimated delivery window.
Then ask: Who supplies any additional packaging? Is this pickup-to-door delivery or a different scope? What happens if the receiving person is unavailable? What are the actual protection, claim and exclusion terms for these belongings? Keep the response with the booking record.
Compare the answers on the same basis. If one quote assumes your own packing and another includes materials and work, clarify that difference before deciding. An unresolved quote is a question to finish, not a low price to celebrate.
Before handover, open your separate arrival bag once more. Can you communicate, enter the destination and manage without the shipment? Has the receiving person agreed? Do the prepared pieces match the declared details? If not, fix the plan before dispatch.
I want you to travel with fewer bags, not fewer options. The successful version of sending luggage ahead is simple: you can get on with your arrival while the non-urgent belongings make their own journey.
- Keep travel and arrival essentials outside the shipment.
- Confirm the exact contents and packaging are accepted.
- Compare quotes for the same finished size and weight.
- Agree a receiving person and an unavailable-recipient fallback.
- Retain the service confirmation, contents list and prepared-condition record.
Use the savings and contribution calculators with your own costs.
Questions, answered
Can I send a suitcase by courier in India?
Some baggage services explicitly handle suitcases, but confirm the actual provider’s acceptance, packed dimensions, weight, contents and packaging requirements. A suitcase being accepted by one service is not approval for every courier or traveller arrangement.
How much does it cost to courier luggage in India?
Get a quote for the finished packed shipment and actual pincodes. Ask how chargeable weight is determined and whether packaging, pickup, delivery, taxes and other applicable charges are included. A general per-kg rate cannot establish your complete cost.
Should I put my suitcase inside a cardboard box?
Follow the chosen provider’s instructions for your specific bag and contents. Ask whether it accepts the prepared suitcase itself, requires outer protection or wants contents repacked. Include any additional packaging in the final measurements and quote.
Can I send my luggage ahead to a hostel?
Confirm the hostel’s receiving and storage arrangements first. Name the person who can receive it and ask the shipping provider about an unavailable-recipient attempt. Keep the things needed on arrival with you rather than relying on the shipment arriving first.
Can ShipdeHop send luggage from another country to India?
No cross-border ShipdeHop service is implied here. ShipdeHop is India-only. Indians abroad may plan domestic journeys and suitable domestic item handoffs for a visit home, subject to actual app options, item suitability and participant agreement.
